Reflection of “Girls Missing
in Asia”
Throughout the history, women seem like
have never been easy. Many people have been fighting for women’s rights for a
long time, and it has been successful in many ways. However, there are a part
of group females not as lucky as those women who benefit the women’s rights.
Some of them were even killed before they can have their first breath. In many
developing countries, female babies are facing sex selection, abortion and
female infanticide problem.
According to the
article “Infanticide, Abortion Responsible for 60 Million Girls Missing in
Asia,” Sherry Karabin thinks that female babies’ sex selection, abortion and
female infanticide are getting serious, and it will have a further consequence.
Due to the lack of government protection and the influence of the traditional
culture, there are at least 60 million girls that already missing. Boys are
often seeing as a combination of responsibility and power. For example, the one
child police in China makes people had to choose to have a boy rather than a
girl. The imbalances between males and females bring many problems to the
country. India is also similar to China. The preference to have a son for
continuing the family name and supporting the elders are is rooted in people’s
mind, and somehow, let a girl to get married needs to spend more money on dowry
than a boy. Those reasons caused 25 million men could not find a wife. However,
Chinese and India governments realized the seriousness of this problem would
direct affect their country’s future. Abandoned the law of sex identification
without a medical requirement was one of the responses China has made. Not only
China and India is facing this problem, but it also has caught the whole
world’s attention. Although, the most dramatic thing was the propose of
eliminating infanticide and gender selection did not pass due to the opposition
from China and India, South Korea was one of those supporter.
Over all, I
think gender selection abortion is mainly based on people’s own culture. The
more traditional people are, the more serious this problem could be. The way to
remit this problem is to publish a law to protect female babies, and encourage
people to love their babies no matter which gender. Women also can do as good
as men in nowadays, even women can do better in some areas. However, achieving
this goal could take a long time, but from a long-term point of view, this is
good for human’s future.
